BACKGROUND

Securing the future of energy is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind today, but overshadowing even this is the spectre of serious and irreversible climate change.

New future energy solutions are urgently needed to meet these challenges and Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s major energy providers, is taking a leadership role in this search.

Combining development with respect for the environment has been a consistent theme of Abu Dhabi since its inception.

The late ruler of Abu Dhabi and Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, not only played a leading role in the formation of the UAE, but also left a legacy of environmental sensitivity and concern for the conservation which is at the heart of modern Abu Dhabi. HH Sheikh Zayed’s vision is today a driving force behind Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Initiative.

Masdar, which translates from Arabic as “the source”, will ensure that Abu Dhabi is the global centre for the future of energy. Masdar represents, by a substantial margin, the world’s single largest investment in future energies. And so, just as HH Sheikh Zayed’s achievements in environmental conservation have been internationally honoured, Abu Dhabi now proposes to recognise and honour outstanding achievements in the global search for future energy solutions by establishing the Zayed Future Energy Prize.
